Career

Alexander Stark studied civil engineering at RWTH Aachen University and Imperial College London between 2005 and 2011. He then worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Solid Construction at RWTH Aachen University (Prof. Hegger). After successfully completing his PhD in 2017 (title of dissertation: "Prestressed Sandwich Panels with Ultra-High Performance Concrete Facings"), he remained at the Institute of Solid Construction in Aachen as a postdoc and working group leader. In addition to the topics of CFRP prestressing, carbon reinforcement, ultra-high performance concrete, and shell and sandwich structures, he focused in particular on modular engineering structures and new manufacturing techniques during this time. Subsequently, in 2018, he sought the path to engineering practice and moved to a medium-sized engineering firm, where he holds various positions (project and team leader, authorized signatory) performing structural calculations for civil engineering structures (wind energy and bridge construction) and building structures, preparing expert opinions and supervising research projects. In parallel, he taught a course in Aachen on industrial construction for two years. He received several prizes and awards for his academic achievements and for his dissertation (Friedrich Wilhelm Prize 2018 of RWTH Aachen University, Borchers Plaque 2018 of RWTH Aachen University, Schöck Construction Innovation Prize 2012 of the Eberhard Schöck Foundation, F.C. Trapp Prize 2012 of RWTH Aachen University, Ernst & Sohn Young Talent Promotion Prize 2011, Josef Pirlet Prize 2007 of Pirlet & Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH).

Alexander Stark has been appointed to the W3 professorship for solid construction at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology as of December 1, 2021.
